Protect Girls’ Rights in South Australian Schools

Protect Girls’ Rights in South Australian Schools

Girls in South Australian schools are being forced to sacrifice their privacy, safety, and fairness.

Under current Department of Education policy, male students who identify as female can access girls’ toilets and changerooms, share overnight accommodation, and compete in female sporting events.

Already, girls have been told to use disabled toilets if they feel uncomfortable sharing bathrooms with boys, and a male student has broken multiple girls’ school sporting records. These examples show how the policy is already undermining girls’ rights and opportunities.

Girls deserve dignity, protection, and a level playing field.

Join us in calling on Premier Malinauskas to guarantee single-sex facilities, accommodation, and sports for girls in every South Australian school.

We, the undersigned, call on the South Australian Government to urgently amend education policy that jeopardises the rights of girls.

Current policy allows male students who identify as female to enter girls’ private spaces, share their sleeping quarters, and compete in girls’ sporting events. This is not inclusive it is unfair and unsafe.

We urge Premier Malinauskas to ensure:

  • Girls have access to single-sex toilets and changerooms in every school.
  • Single-sex sleeping arrangements are provided for school camps and overnight stays.
  • Female-only categories are maintained in competitive school sport.

The wellbeing of girls depends on strong boundaries that respect their privacy, safety, and dignity. True inclusion must balance the needs of all students, without erasing the rights of girls.
