The NSW Labor Government has launched a parliamentary inquiry into the harmful impacts of online pornography, particularly on young people. It is the first state to hold an inquiry of this kind.
The inquiry is a crucial response to the devastating impact early exposure to pornography is having on the attitudes and development of children and young people, including the normalisation of violence against women and girls.
A 2023 report by the eSafety Commissioner revealed that 75% of Australian teenagers aged 16-18 had been exposed to online pornography, with nearly a third encountering it before turning 13.
The inquiry will investigate a wide array of issues, including the mental, emotional, and physical impacts of early exposure to pornography, the role of AI-generated content, and the effectiveness of existing restrictions.
The NSW Government says the inquiry underscores its commitment to addressing the normalisation of misogyny and violence online, aligning with broader efforts to combat domestic violence and sexual assault.
Women’s Forum Australia welcomes this critical initiative by the NSW Government.
Have your say by making a submission to the inquiry by 1 November 2024.
