Politicians in NSW and Queensland are trying to further liberalise prostitution in those states, claiming that removing restrictions around prostitution will “promote health” and “safety”, ensuring it is treated “like any other job”.

This week, New South Wales is set to debate Independent MP Alex Greenwich’s Equality Legislation Amendment (LGBTIQA+) Bill 2023, a component of which seeks to decriminalise overseas commercial surrogacy. While altruistic surrogacy is legal throughout Australia, commercial surrogacy remains illegal (due to concerns regarding the exploitation of women and children), and in NSW, this includes procuring commercial surrogacy arrangements overseas. Greenwich has long been an advocate for surrogacy.

Women’s and children’s advocates have been celebrating the latest win in the fight against Pornhub after Visa and Mastercard suspended card payments for advertising on the porn giant’s platform on 4 August.

According to a recent article in Psychology Today, sex-based inequality is a significant factor contributing to trafficking in women, which is why this trade flourishes in Asia. Mimi Vu, an anti-trafficking advocate based in Vietnam, understands that westerners are reluctant to tackle the issue of sexism in Asian cultures because they do not wish to appear insensitive. Nevertheless, because endemic cultural sexism informs so many of the factors that fuel the demand for women, Vu concludes that “talking about gender inequality, openly and pointedly” represents “the first step in preventing the problem.”
