During the RU486 debate a consensus emerged on both sides that the rate of abortion in Australia is too high. WFA welcomes this development. WFA has argued that greater political will needs to be committed to ameliorating the myriad factors which often pressure women to terminate their pregnancies. WFA believes superior outcomes for women’s health can be achieved through well-formulated economic, health and social policies that redress the lack of choices, inequities, violence, adverse circumstances and inadequate support that many pregnant women face. You can read WFA's submission to the Senate Community Affairs Committee which examined the RU486 Bill. You can download a copy of the submission here.
WFA has also written to clarify some issues relating to rural women's health which arose from WFA's original submission. |

WFA has condemned the passing of The Therapeutic Goods Amendment (Repeal Of Ministerial Responsibility For Approval of RU486) Bill 2005. The legislation has removed the system of accountability and scrutiny over the importation of the chemical abortion drug RU486.
