Faking It? Get Real! Teacher’s Resource Kit

Purchase Faking It? Get Real

In 2010, after many requests from educators across the country, Women’s Forum Australia developed Faking It? Get Real! This engaging educational resource is based on Women’s Forum Australia’s own research publication Faking It: The female image in young women’s magazines. The aim of this resource is to provide educators with self-contained, classroom-ready materials and teaching strategies to enable exploration of the messages embodied by popular culture and the impact they have on the healthy development and decision making of girls and young women.

Topics in Faking It? Get Real! provide students with resources for:

  • Studying the major messages sent by popular magazines, media and advertisers;
  • Evaluating the way media and advertising may objectify, sexualise and disempower girls and young women; and
  • Indentifying how girls and young women can transform popular culture.

The resource uses an inquiry approach –students are provided with a variety of evidence and information, and they are prompted to analyse this material to form their own conclusions and decisions.
